The dean of physical faculty is professor Ivakhnik Valery Vladimirovich.

Being the base of modern technics, physics specifies new ways of mastering forces of the nature and actively influences development of adjacent sciences.

The faculty was founded in 1969. The first dean and manager of Faculty of physics was professor A.D.Ershov.

The physical faculty has the big modern material base and highly skilled staff of teachers for preparation of experts on the basic sections of modern physics. Now at faculty 47 teachers work, the majority have a scientific degree of the doctor or the candidate of sciences.

The faculty maintains close scientific communications with the leading academic and branch research organizations: Physical institute of the Russian Academy of Science, the Mathematical institute of the Russian Academy of Science Incorporated by institute of nuclear researches in Dubna, Institute of metallophysics UAS, Physicotechnical institute named after A.Ioffe of the Russian Academy of Science ( St.-Petersburg), Institute of problems of materiology UAS, Institute of physics of a solid body of the Russian Academy of Science, Physicotechnical institute UAN (Kharkov), Institute of radio electronics of the Russian Academy of Science (Moscow), etc.

Physical faculty prepares experts on specialities of "Physicist" on day time and evening branches and " Physics of a solid body " on day time. In the basis of the curriculum there is the idea of a combination of theoretical education and experimental, special preparation in the field of physics, mathematics with wide arts education incorporated. Students of first two years receive the general preparation. Experimental preparation begins in the general physical practical work in laboratories where students get acquainted with bases of mechanics, molecular physics, electricity, optics, electronics, radio engineering, nuclear and nuclear physics.

In the end of the second year distribution of students on faculties and specializations takes place , simultaneously with continuation of studying of the general courses, specialization in the selected area of physics begins. Preparation of students and their scientific work are conducted on the most various directions of physics: the theoretical physics; optics and spectroscopy; physics of metals; radiophysics and radio electronics; thermophysics; solid-state electronics. On 3-5 courses students study the nuclear and nuclear physics, electrodynamics , thermodynamics, the quantum mechanics, methods of mathematical physics. Courses of programming and mathematical modelling ,a computer practice became an integral part of the curriculum . On the senior courses skills of students to work on the COMPUTER are enhanced during their performance of laboratory works in special laboratories, performance of course and degree works. The significant place in the curriculum is allocated to economic and legal knowledge.

The program of training at physical faculty allows to prepare experts of the top skills in the field of the physics, having skills in the field of programming and the mathematical modelling, possessing knowledge of foreign language, economy and the right.

Despite of rather brief period of development of physical faculty, the experts-physicists prepared at it (already more than 1500 persons), are in great demand at the scientific organizations and the industrial enterprises of the Samara area and they bring the essential contribution to the solvation of scientific and technical problems of our region.
